Derek Hatley

Derek Hatley has been involved in many musical genres throughout his fairly long life--classical, folk, jazz, pop, rock, and many more. He got into barbershop only about 14 years ago, and brought his broad musical background into barbershop songwriting and arranging. Although he loves traditional barbershop, and hopes it will be preserved forever, he also sees the TLBB quartet ensemble as unique in and of itself, with the potential for performing many types of music other than the classic barbershop repertoire.

Certainly, more modern popular music is one area into which barbershop can venture. The four arrangements below are examples of this and use some harmonies that are less familiar to barbershoppers. Derek uses a notation tool--Harmony Assistant/Virtual Singer--that allows arrangements to be played back with computer synthesized voices. They're not pretty, but they give an idea how the arrangement will sound.

Black Water--The Doobie Brothers' funky classic.

You've Lost the Lovin' Feelin'--The Righteous Brothers' classic hit. On of the most popular songs of the 20th century.

I'm Into Something Good--Herman's Hermits' happy hit.

Without You-- Twice a hit, with Harry Nilsson and with Mariah Carey.
